In 2009, Anchorage businesses continue to struggle to provide affordable health care to its employees. Every year, costs continue to rise. What progress is being made with state and local health care leaders to alleviate these costs and ensure adequate coverage to all Alaskans?

Jennifer Bundy-Cobb from the Wilson Agency; Jeff Davis from Blue Cross Blue Shield, Linda Hall, director of the State of Alaska Division of Insurance; and Robert Gootee, president of ODS Alaska, will discuss the current trends for insurance costs, how the industry establishes these prices and share thoughts on health care reform.

Christine Klein, deputy commissioner of airports and aviation for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, will give an update of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and how it has become one of Anchorage's largest economic engine drivers.

No Ambassador Committee Meeting 12/1/2009

There will not be an Ambassador Committee meeting in December. We will resume our regular schedule in January.

The Ambassador Committee is an energetic group of people who work together to maintain contact with other Anchorage Chamber members while helping to promote the Anchorage Chamber. Ambassadors are present at many Anchorage Chamber functions and are the major coordinators for Anchorage Chamber networking events like Business After Hours and the annual “Get on Board with the Anchorage Chamber” Train Ride.

The committee meets the first Tuesday of each month.

Anchorage Chamber members are encouraged and welcome to attend committee meetings.

Grassroots Network Developed to Engage Members in Advocacy Process

The Grassroots Network is an exciting opportunity for members who are interested in actively engaging in the Anchorage Chamber’s government affairs efforts.

Under the leadership of board member Eden Larson of KLEBS Mechanical, Inc., this group will be called upon to serve as advocates of Anchorage Chamber positions, including writing letters to decision and policy makers, testifying to government bodies, or just helping to “spread the word.”

This is a new group and a meeting to establish goals and framework will be held Wednesday, December 2 from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation Board Room, 510 L Street, Suite 603 .

The Anchorage Chamber Military Committee interfaces with the military to address mutual concerns and focuses on military/community involvement. This committee is responsible for Military Appreciation Week.

This year, the Anchorage Chamber has held a series of Monday Forum presentations with the goal to educate its members on health care issues.

Health care is a leading industry and one of the state’s largest employers. As the state continues to grow, the demand for health care services increases.

As Alaska’s health care center, what are local hospital’s doing to meet this demand? What technology and service advancements are being made to prevent patients from being treated out of state, and how are health care jobs being affected during uncertain economic times?

Guests from the city’s leading medical centers, including Bruce Lamoureux, chief operating officer for Providence Health & Services Alaska and Andrew Mayo, CEO of North Star Behavioral Health, will discuss industry updates, medical technology advances, upcoming priorities for next year, and share their thoughts on the current health care reform issue.

What is a Brown Bag Lunch? This educational seminar includes a consultation geared toward small-to-medium-sized businesses presented by community experts. Cost is $10 for members and $20 for non-members. Soda, coffee and tea will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own lunch.
